Change Perspectives to Change Direction

We teach our clients how to first shift perspectives before they can alter the direction of their businesses towards sustainable success.   Oprah Winfrey understands the tremendous power of perspective.  She saw a different future for poor girls in South Africa when she opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007 in Henley-On-Klip.  On Saturday, 72 of the first 75 girls enrolled will graduate and head to universities in South Africa and the U.S. for studies such as law, medicine, engineering and economics.  Part of their learning has been to inspire them to go forth in the world and make a difference.

"We're taking a victory lap here, for transformation," Winfrey said. "Every single girl is going to leave here with something greater to offer the world than her body."

To do things differently, we must see things differently.  Then we start asking questions that we didn’t think of asking before and finding solutions to bring us from today to a very different tomorrow.

Oprah banned the term “disadvantaged” from being used in the academy saying that these girls may be poor, but their minds aren’t disadvantaged.  Using these terms labels people and lowers expectations, sending negative signals to young people about their chances for success.

Transformation doesn’t come easy, and Oprah acknowledges that hers is not a sustainable model.  The entire system must shift.  Catalysts beyond the rich and famous continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes to bring about change.

“My young friends, doors are opening to you – doors of opportunities that were not open to your mothers and fathers – and the great challenge facing you is to be ready to face these doors as they open.”

-       Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
