University of Georgia’s August 2011 graduates were honored by Dennis P. Lockhart, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, as their commencement speaker. Mr. Lockhart began by saying that he would not speak about the economy, since this is “supposed to be a happy occasion”. Instead, he shared advice that he has given his daughter. So far nearly 700 colleges and universities representing more than one-third of higher education students in the U.S. have signed The American College & University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) to address global warming emissions and integrate sustainability into their curriculum and practices.

Between 2006 and 2010 Timberland cut their carbon emissions by 38% while saving about $1.4 million through targeting their supply chain, efficiency improvements, renewable energy development and employee engagement. They have retrofitted the lighting in their distribution centers, headquarters and retail stores to help cut energy demand for those facilities by at least 30%.
